Paper Soul

Aurora has had a rough 16 years. She lost her parents tragically when she was a baby, than her foster parents just a few years ago. Now she has to stay with her aunt, uncle and horrible cousin. How can it possible get worse. Maybe being kidnapped by a queen that wants you dead. Aurora is transported to another world where she has responsibilities and abilities that she does not fully understand. Will she rise to the occasion or fall under the pressure?

Pro:

- The pace was a consistent beat. There was really no lag time where I thought the book was dragging or needed to move faster. I appreciated the constant interactions and action that the book had.

- The theme of the book was interesting. I'm always interested in learning new lands and cultures such as the Fae and mages. The only knowledge I had of Morgana and her magic was from a Disney movie, The Apprentice, which I loved. I liked how the book blended these communities together and gave the reader a glimpse into them.

Con:

- I really wanted to like this book, I really did. But from the start it just screamed Harry potter to me. A child that has lost their parents at an early age, shipped off to a relatives to live and than bam magic powers. I was hoping there would be a stronger difference that I could feel this book was a different story line. Through out the book there where other themes from stories that I was reminded of. Such as Lord of the Rings and Eragon. It just felt like the book was a combo of all these and a slight tinkering to make it different.

- Aurora! Through out the book I wanted to shake her for her stupidity and childish behavior. Yeah I know I know she's a teenager and that's what they do. But I wanted her to grow and mature because of the experiences she was having. Yet this never happened and it seemed so adolescent. She focused too much on the crush she had when she should be focusing on more important things. The crush was another con for me because it played out so immaturely. When she didn't get her way she would whine and throw a tantrum. Its war woman! pull it together!! I felt I was reading a little girls journal. My enjoyment of Rafe's character was always overshadowed by Auroras teenage immaturity. It just seemed that he was out of her league both emotionally and mentally. I wanted more growth and strength from Aurora's character.
